Social Media: Waste of Time or Game Changing Tool?

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn – names that many people have come to know and loathe or love over the last few years. But the question should always be asked, are these sites just a way to waste time, or are they a new tool that changes the game entirely. The answer … yes.

So what makes Facebook such a hit? Why is everyone talking about LinkedIn?  Why is the President tweeting?  It’s all about being “social” – the ability to easily interact with others virtually.  On Facebook I have reconnected with friends from high school.  On LinkedIn I talk to colleagues and business associates from ten years ago and from 10 days ago.  I put the mundane and the profound online and get comments and connections from all sorts of people.  But is it valuable?

Let’s look at it from three perspectives…

Personal personnel development

It’s occurred to me lately that we as individuals need to look at our work habits and address our own issues. I know that employees normally count on the boss for feedback and direction, but doesn’t it really make more sense to work on our own short-comings. If I’m honest with my self, then I know where I fall short and what I could change to do a better job. If I think about it creatively, there are also better ways to do my job that I could try out that will make a difference for the company, and ultimately for me.
