I’m not the most important person in the world

Learning this one simple rule makes a lot of other things work better and make more sense. When I forget this rule, trouble follows. Plus, it’s biblical.

When I get to feeling that my needs and desires outweigh everyone else’s, I make selfish choices. While I don’t believe in Karma or The Law Of Attraction or any of that junk, it’s usually true that when I’m making selfish choices, then others around me tend to be more selfish. When I’m more selfless, others tend to be more giving and caring as well. Why is it this way? I don’t know, but take a look around and see if you don’t notice the same thing.

What’s your experience?

Book Review: Wild At Heart

The original version of this book created a movement among men, especially Christians, who feel that a great read. something is missing in them being a “real man”. This is not a he-man, macho thing, but a real exploration of what it means to be a man – strong and loving, tough and tender. John Eldredge is a gifted wordsmith, and this book is no exception. It’s easy to read but at the same time very rich and vibrant. It is so enjoyable that I would read it again. This updated version adds some new stories that have happened since Eldredge wrote the original which add depth as well. Overall, it’s a great read!

The one thing you should know in getting in to this book – it is just the beginning. Eldredge himself describes it as 101 level information. It lays the groundwork for the masculine Christian journey, but there is so much more to do once you finish this basic exploration.

I recommend this book to men who are trying to grow in their masculinity and authenticity – it’s a great baseline for that journey. I’d also recommend it to wives and mothers to give them a look into their men and boys.

You can find it here: Wild at Heart: Discovering the Secret of a Man’s Soul.

Racism

I’ve got to admit it – I don’t understand most “isms”, especially racism.  Don’t get me wrong, I understand that people feel racism and practice racial prejudice and discrimination, and I understand a very little of what it feels like to be on the receiving end of that belief.  I’m not trying to diminish the damage caused throughout history by various “isms” – racism, sexism, nationalism, even “faith-ism”.  I just don’t understand why people would limit themselves and their thinking with such small ideas.

I’ve thought about it a lot and I just can’t understand why people, if they thought about it even a little, would believe that other people are bad just because they are different in some superficial way.  I can understand not trusting someone because they have been untrustworthy to you or to others in the past.  I can’t understand not trusting someone because of the color of their skin.  My life would not be nearly as rich if I stayed away from people based on race, religion, age, politics, gender, or whatever.  How foolish I would be to limit myself in that way.

There are plenty of real things to fear without making up new ones. Sometimes, we just seem to invent junk to make life difficult for ourselves.
